THE BOOK OF AMOS

Amos Chapter 4

¶ Listen to these words, you cows of Bashan, who are in the hills of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to your husbands, Get it, and let us drink.

The Lord GOD has sworn by his holiness, that the days will come upon you, when he will take you away with hooks, and the last of you with fishhooks.

And you will go out through breaks in the wall, each woman straight ahead; and you will be driven along toward Harmon, says the LORD.

Come to the golden calf at Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply your wrongdoing; bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes every three days:

Offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, call for freewill offerings and tell who gave them: for this is what you love, O children of Israel, says the Lord GOD.

¶ That is why I have given you empty mouths in all your cities, and the lack of food in all your homes: yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

I have also withheld the rain from you, when there were still three months until the harvest: and I caused it to rain on one city, and to not rain on another city: one field was rained upon, and another got none and dried up.

So two or three towns staggered to another town, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

I have struck you with scorching wind and mildew: when your gardens, your vineyards, your fig trees, and your olive trees increased, the locust devoured them: yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

I have sent plagues among you the like those of Egypt: I have slain your young men with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stench of your camp fill your nostrils: yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

I overthrew some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a burning stick snatched from the fire: yet you have not returned to me, says the LORD.

Therefore this is what I will do to you, O Israel: and because I will do it to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel.

And know that the name of the one who formed the mountains, and created the wind; who reveals his thoughts to man, and makes the dawn dark, and walks on the high places of the earth, is Jahweh, The God of hosts.
