THE
BOOK OF AMOS
Amos Chapter 6
1
¶ Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and those who feel secure on the
mountain of Samaria, those who are the best of the best of nations, to
whom the house of Israel comes!
2
Go over to Calneh, and look; and from there go to the
great city of
3
You who act as if the day of destruction is far away, and allow violence to
reign around you;
4
Who lie on beds of ivory, and stretch out on couches, and eat the lambs from
the flock, and the calves from the stall;
5
Who sing to the sound of the lyre, and invent for themselves instruments
of music, like David;
6
Who drink wine from bowls, and anoint themselves with the best ointments: but
are not grieved over the destruction of Joseph.
7
Therefore they will now be the first to go into captivity, and the revelry of
sprawling banqueters will be gone.
8
¶ The Lord GOD has sworn by himself, the LORD the God of hosts says, I am
disgusted with the pride of Jacob, and hate his palaces: therefore I will hand
over the city and everything in it.
9
And it will come to pass, that if ten people are left in one home, they will
die.
10
And when a man’s uncle comes, to carry the bones out of the house and burn
them, he will ask one who is inside of the house, Are there anymore
with you? and he will say, No. Then he will say, Hold
your tongue: for we dare not mention the name of the LORD.
11
For the LORD has commanded, that a large house be
broken to pieces, and a small house to rubble.
12
Do horses run on rocks? can one plow the sea
with oxen? for you have turned justice into poison,
and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:
13
You who delight in nothing, who say, Haven’t we won
victories by our own strength?
14
But, behold, I will raise up against you a nation, O house of Israel, says the
LORD the God of hosts; and they will oppress you from the entrance of Hemath to the brook of the Arabah.
