THE BOOK OF AMOS

Amos Chapter 7

¶ The Lord GOD has shown me this; he was forming locusts at the time the spring crop was beginning to grow; it was the growth after cutting the kings hay.

And it came to pass, that when they had finished eating the grass of the land, I said, O Lord GOD, I beg you to forgive: how can Jacob survive? for he is small.

And the LORD relented concerning this: It will not be, said the LORD.

The Lord GOD has shown me this: the Lord GOD has called for punishment by fire, and it will consume the deep sea, and devour the land.

Then I said, O Lord GOD, stop, I beg you: how will Jacob survive? for he is small.

And the LORD also relented concerning this: This too will not be, says the Lord GOD.

He showed me this: and, behold, the Lord stood on a vertical wall, with a plumbline in his hand.

And the LORD asked me, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A plumbline. Then the Lord said, Behold, I will place a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: And I will not overlook their sins any longer:

And the high places of Isaac will be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

¶ Then Amaziah the priest at Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos is plotting against you right among the people of Israel: the land cannot endure all his words.

For Amos said, Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely be led away captive out of their own land.

Amaziah also said to Amos, O you seer, go, flee into the land of Judah, and eat your bread there, and prophesy there:

But never prophesy again in Bethel: for it is the king’s sanctuary, and a royal temple.

Then Amos replied to Amaziah saying, I was no prophet, nor was I a prophet’s son; but I was a herdsman, and a gatherer of sycamore figs:

But the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.

Therefore now listen to the word of the LORD: You say, Do not prophesy against Israel, and stop preaching against the house of Isaac.

Therefore the LORD says; Your wife will be a harlot in the city, and your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, and your land will be divided by line; and you will die in a polluted land: and Israel will surely be taken from its land into captivity.
