THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY

Deuteronomy Chapter 18

¶ The Levitical priests, and the entire tribe of Levi, shall have no part or inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings made by fire to the LORD, that is their inheritance.

Therefore they shall have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he has said to them.

And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from those who offer a sacrifice, whether it is ox or sheep; they shall give to the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the stomach.

The first fruits of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep, you shall give to him.

For the LORD your God has chosen him out of all your tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.

And if a Levite leaves any of your towns, where he lives in Israel, and wants to go to the place which the LORD shall choose;

Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, like all his fellow Levites do, who stand there before the LORD.

They shall have the same portions to eat, besides that which comes from the sale of his family property.

¶ When you come into the land which the LORD your God gives you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations.

There shall not be found among you any one who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or who uses divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD your God is driving them out before you.

You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

For these nations, which you shall possess, listened to observers of times, and to diviners: but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you so to do.

¶ The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from the midst of you, from your brethren; you must listen to him;

This is what you desired from the LORD your God in Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, nor let me see this great fire any longer, lest I die.

And the LORD said to me, They have rightly said what they have said.

I will raise up for them a Prophet from among their brethren, like you, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.

And it will come to pass, that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

But the prophet, who shall presume to speak any word in my name, that I have not commanded him to speak, or who shall speak in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.

And if you say in your heart, How shall we know which words the LORD has not spoken?

When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass, or prove true, that is a word that the LORD has not spoken, but the prophet has spoken it presumptuously: do not be afraid of him.
