THE BOOK OF EXODUS

Exodus Chapter 16

¶ On the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt, the entire congregation of Israel departed from Elim, and moved to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai.

In the desert the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron:

And said to them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, and when we ate all the food we wanted; for you have brought us out into this desert, to starve this entire multitude to death.

Then the LORD said to Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, to see if they will do what I tell them, or not.

On the sixth day, they shall prepare to bring in twice as much as they gather on other days.

So Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, This evening you will know that the LORD has brought you out of the land of Egypt:

And in the morning, you will see the glory of the LORD; for he hears your complaining against the LORD: for what are we, that you complain against us?

And Moses said, When the LORD gives you meat to eat in the evening, and all the bread you want in the morning; because the LORD has heard your complaining which you murmur against him: what are we? Your complaining is not against us, but against the LORD.

And Moses said to Aaron, Say to the entire congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD: for he has heard your complaining.

And it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the desert, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

I have heard the complaining of the children of Israel: speak to them, saying, At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread; and you will know that I am the LORD your God.

¶ And in the evening quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning a dew was lying around the camp.

And when the dew lifted, the surface of the ground in the desert was covered with a small round thing, as fine as frost on the ground.

And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, manna: for they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, This is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.

And this is what the LORD commands, Let every man gather of it as much as he will need, an omer for each person, according to the number of persons; let each man gather for those in his tent.

And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

And when they measured it with an omer, he who gathered much had nothing over, and he who gathered little had no lack; each gathered as much as he could eat.

And Moses said, Let none of it be left until morning.

However they did not listen to Moses; some of them left it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was angry with them.

So they gathered it every morning, each one gathered as much as he could eat: but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

¶ And on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one person: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

And he said to them, This is what the LORD has said, Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy sabbath to the LORD: bake and boil what you will bake and boil today; and that which is left over set aside to be kept until morning.

And they set it aside until the morning, as Moses said: and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it.

And Moses said, Eat that today; for today is a sabbath to the LORD: you will not find any in the field today.

You will gather it for six days; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, there shall be none.

And it came to pass, that some of the people went out to gather on the seventh day, but they did not find any.

And the LORD said to Moses, How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?

Understand this, because the LORD has given you a day of rest, he gives you enough food on the sixth day for two days; let every man stay home, and not leave his place on the seventh day.

So the people rested on the seventh day.

And the house of Israel called the bread Manna: it was white like coriander seed; and it tasted like wafers made with honey.

¶ And Moses said, This is the LORD"S command, Fill an omer with it to be kept for your descendants; that they may see the bread that I fed you with in the desert, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.

So Moses told Aaron, Take a jar, and put an omer full of manna in it, and place it before the LORD, to be kept for your descendants.

As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the word of Testimony, to be preserved.

And the children of Israel ate manna for forty years, until they came to a habitable land; they ate manna, until they reached the outskirts of the land of Canaan.

Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.
