FIRST CORINTHIANS

First Corinthians 1

¶ Paul, called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,

To God’s congregation in Corinth, to those who have been set apart in Christ Jesus, and called to be saints, together with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

Grace to you and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I continually give thanks to God on your behalf, because of the grace of God given to you in Jesus Christ;

For in him you have been enriched in every way, in all you say, and in all knowledge;

Because our testimony concerning Christ was confirmed in you:

So that you do not lack any spiritual gift; as you wait eagerly for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

He will keep you strong to the end, that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is true to his promise.

¶ Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

For, my brethren, those of the household of Chloe have made it clear to me that there are quarrels among you.

What I mean is this, that each one of you says, I am of Paul; or I am of Apollos; or I am of Cephas; or I am of Christ.

Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

¶ I thank God that I did not baptize any of you, except Crispus and Gaius;

Lest anyone should claim to be baptized in my name.

I also baptized the household of Stephanas: beyond that, I do not remember if I baptized anyone else.

¶ For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with words of worldly wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be made of none effect.

For the preaching of the cross is foolishness to those who perish; but it is the power of God to us who are saved.

For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will reject the understanding of the prudent.

Where is the wise man? where is the scholar? where is the debater of this world? Hasn’t God made the wisdom of this world foolish?

For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know God, it pleased God to save those who believe through the foolishness of preaching.

For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to the Jews, and foolishness to the Greeks;

But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Brethren, simply consider your own call, how that not many of you were wise in the eyes of the world, not many powerful, not many well born:

On the contrary, God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; and God chose the weak things of the world to shame the mighty;

He chose the lowly things of this world, and things that are despised, and things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are:

That no man should boast in his presence.

But because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption:

Therefore, even as it is written, Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.
