JAMES

James Chapter 5

¶ Come now, you rich men, weep and howl because of the misery that will come upon you.

Your wealth has decayed, and your garments are moth-eaten.

Your gold and silver is eaten away; and its corrosion will testify against you, and consume your flesh like fire. In the last days you have laid up treasure on earth.

Behold, the wages of the workers who reaped your fields, that you kept back by fraud, cry out: and the cries of those who did the harvesting have entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts.

You have lived in luxury on the earth, and indulged yourselves; you have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter.

You have condemned and killed the just; and he does not stop you.

Be patient therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient for its sake, until it receives the early and late rains.

Also be patient; and strengthen your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draws near.

Do not hold grudges against each other, brethren, lest you be condemned: behold, the judge is standing at the door.

My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering affliction, and patience.

You know that we regard those who have bravely endured as blessed. You have heard of the patience of Job, and know the outcome of the Lord’s dealings; that the Lord is full of pity, and merciful.

¶ But above all, my brethren, do not swear, not by heaven, or by earth, or by anything else: but let your yes be yes; and your no be no; lest you fall into condemnation.

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Confess your faults to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.

Elijah was a man subject to the same passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months.

And he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

Brethren, if anyone among you errs from the truth, and another brings him back;

Let him realize, that he who turns a sinner back from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and cover a multitude of sins.
