THE BOOK OF JOB

Job Chapter 2

¶ There was another day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.

And the LORD said to Satan, Where have you come from? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going through the earth, and traveling back and forth on it.

And the LORD said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God, and shuns evil? he still remains blameless, although you incited me against him, to destroy him without cause.

And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, a man will give all that he has for his life.

But stretch out your hand, and touch his bones and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.

So the LORD said to Satan, Behold, he is in your hand; but spare his life.

¶ So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

And Job took a broken piece of pottery to scrape himself with; and sat down among the ashes.

Then his wife said to him, Are you still trying to be godly? curse God, and die.

But he said to her, You are talking like one of the foolish women. What? shall we accept good from the hand of God, and not accept adversity? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

¶ Now when Job’s three friends heard of all the trouble that had come upon him, each of them came to him from his own home; Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuah, and Zophar from Naama: for they had agreed on a time to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

And when they looked at him from a distance, and did not recognize him, they lifted up their voices, and wept; and each of them tore his garment, and they cast dust over their heads toward the heavens.

So they sat down on the ground with Job for seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
