THE BOOK OF JOB

Job Chapter 38

¶ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

Who is this who obscures my purpose by words without knowledge?

Prepare to answer me like a man; for I will question you, so answer me.

¶ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? speak, if you have understanding.

Tell who determined its measurements, if you know? or who stretched a measuring line upon it?

Upon what are its foundations fastened? or who laid its corner stone;

When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Or who shut in the sea with doors, when it burst forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?

When I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it,

When I prescribed its shoreline, and set bars and doors,

And said, you can come this far, but no further: and here your surging waves will stop?

¶ Have you commanded the morning since your days began; and caused the dawn to know its place;

That light might reach the ends of the earth, and drive wickedness out of it?

It is changed like clay under a seal; and things stand out like the folds of a garment.

But light is withheld from the wicked, and the arm raised in violence will be broken.

Have you explored the springs of the sea? or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?

Have the gates of death been opened to you? or have you looked at the portals of darkness?

Do you know the size of the earth? speak if you know it all.

Where is the path where light dwells? and as for darkness, where is its abode,

That you may take it to its place, and that you should know the path to its house?

Do you know it, because you were born then? or because the number of your days is great?

Have you been to the place where snow is stored? or seen the stores of hail,

Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?

In what way is the light parted, or the east wind spread over the earth?

¶ Who has prepared a channel for the torrents of rain, or a path for the thunder clouds;

To bring rain on a land, where no man lives; and on the desert, where no one is;

To satisfy the parched wasteland; and to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

Does the rain have a father? or who has begotten the drops of dew?

Whose womb did the ice come out of? and who has given birth to the white frost of heaven?

The waters are hidden as under a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

Can you bind the Pleiades into a cluster, or loose the bands of Orion?

Can you bring out the stars at the right time? or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?

Do you know the laws of heaven? did you establish the dominion of those laws on the earth?

Can you call out to the clouds, so that a downpour of water may cover you?

Can you send flashes of lightning, so that they go, and say to you, Here we are?

Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? or who has given understanding to the heart?

Who is wise enough to number the clouds? or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

When the dust grows hard, and the clods cake together?

Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

When they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in their hiding place?

Who provides food for the raven? when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food.
