THE BOOK OF JOHN

John Chapter 13

¶ Just before the feast of the passover, Jesus knew that the time had come for him to depart from this world and go to the Father, and having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

Now by the time of the supper, the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;

Jesus knowing that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God, and was going back to God;

Got up from supper, and laid aside his garments; and wrapped a towel around his waist.

After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash his disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

When he came to Simon Peter: Peter said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet?

In answer Jesus said, You do not understand what I am doing now; but you will understand in the future.

No, Peter said, You will never wash my feet. Jesus replied, If I do not wash you, you have no part with me.

Then Simon Peter replied, Lord, wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.

Jesus answered, Anyone who has bathed only needs to wash his feet, but is clean all over: and you are clean, but not all of you.

For he knew who would betray him; that is why he said, You are not all clean.

So after he had washed their feet, and put on his garments, and sat back down, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you?

You call me Master and Lord: and you are right; for I am.

If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

For I have given you an example, that you should do what I have done to you.

Truly, truly, I tell you, No servant is greater than his master; nor is a messenger greater than him who sent him.

If you know these things, you will be happier if you practice them.

¶ I am not talking about all of you: I know whom I have chosen: but the scripture must be fulfilled, He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.

Now I am telling you before it takes place, so that, when it happens, you may believe that I am he.

Truly, truly, I tell you, He who receives whomever I send receives me; and he who receives me receives him who sent me.

After Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and declared, Truly, truly, I tell you, that one of you will betray me.

Then the disciples looked at one another, wondering of whom he spoke.

Now one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.

Therefore Simon Peter motioned to him, indicating that he should ask who he was speaking of.

Leaning back against Jesus, he then asked, Lord, who is it?

Jesus answered, It is he, to whom I will give this piece of bread, after I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

And after he took the bread Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, What you do, do quickly.

However no one at the table knew why Jesus said this to him.

Some of them thought that, because Judas had the bag, Jesus had told him to, Buy those things that we need for the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.

Immediately after receiving the bread Judas went out: and it was night.

¶ When he had gone, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.

If God is glorified in him, then God will also glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him now.

Little children, I will only be with you for a little while longer. You will seek me: but just as I told the Jews, I am now telling you, Where I go, you cannot come;.

A new commandment I give you, Love one another; love one another, as I have loved you.

By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

¶ Simon Peter asked him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus replied, Where I go, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow me later.

Peter then asked, Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life on your behalf.

Jesus answered him, Will you really lay down your life for my sake? Truly, truly, I tell you, The rooster will not crow, before you have denied me three times.
