THE BOOK OF JOHN

John Chapter 15

¶ I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.

He cuts off every branch in me that does not bear fruit: and he prunes every branch that does bear fruit, so that it will bring forth more fruit.

You are now clean through the word that I have spoken to you.

Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear any fruit by itself, if it does not remain in the vine; you cannot bear fruit either, unless you remain in me.

I am the vine, you are the branches: He who remains in me, and I in him, produces much fruit: for you can do nothing without me.

If a man does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a discarded branch, that dries up; and is gathered, and thrown into the fire, and burned.

If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

My Father is glorified in this, that you bear much fruit; and so prove to be my disciples.

¶ As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you: continue in my love.

If you keep my commandments, you will continue in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and continue in his love.

I have told you these things, so that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

This is my commandment, That you love one another, as I have loved you.

No man has greater love than this, that he lays down his life for his friends.

You are my friends, if you do as I have instructed you.

From now on I no longer call you servants; for a servant does not know what his master does: instead I have called you friends; for I have told you everything that I heard from my Father.

You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and appointed you, to go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he may give to you.

This I command you, that you love one another.

¶ If the world hates you, you know that it hated me before it hated you.

If you were of the world, the world would love its own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you.

Remember what I told you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.

But they will do all of these things to you because of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of this sin: but now they are without excuse.

He who hates me hates my Father as well.

If I had not done things among them that no one else ever did, they would not be guilty of this sin: but now they have seen these things and yet hate both me and my Father.

But this happened, in fulfillment of these words written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

¶ But when the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify of me:

And you will also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

[Note: Verse 10 Since the purpose of the law is to show us our sin (Romans 3:19-20), only those who humbly admit their sin and look to Christ for mercy are keeping His commandments (Romans 10:4). All others are refusing to look at what those commandments say.]
