THE BOOK OF JOHN

John Chapter 6

¶ After these things Jesus crossed over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

And a large crowd followed him, because they had seen the miracles that he had performed on those who were sick.

Then Jesus went up onto a hill, and sat there with his disciples.

This was near the time of the Jewish passover feast.

When Jesus looked up, and saw a large crowd approaching him, he said to Philip, Where will we buy bread, so that these people may eat?

Now he said this to test him: because he knew what he would do.

Philip answered, Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for everyone to have a little.

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,

There is a lad here, who has five barley loaves, and two small fish: but what is that among so many?

And Jesus said, Have the people sit down. Now there was plenty of grass in that place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.

Jesus then took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were seated; so also with the fish as much as they wanted.

When they were filled, he told his disciples to, Gather up the remaining fragments, so that nothing would be lost.

Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves, left over by those who had eaten.

After the people saw the miracle that Jesus did, they said, Surely this is the prophet who is to come into the world.

¶ Therefore when Jesus realized that they intended to take him by force, and make him a king, he withdrew again into the hills by himself.

And when evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,

And got into a boat, and set off across the sea toward Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not come to them.

And the sea grew rough because a strong wind was blowing.

So when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat: and they were afraid.

But he said to them, It is I; do not be afraid.

Then they gladly welcomed him into the boat: and immediately the boat was at the shore where they were heading.

¶ The next day, the people who had remained on the other side of the lake noticed that only one boat had been there, which his disciples had gotten into, and that Jesus had not gotten into the boat with his disciples, but they had gone away alone;

(However some other boats from Tiberias landed near the place where they had eaten bread, after the Lord had given thanks:)

Therefore when the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they also got into the boats, and went to Capernaum, looking for Jesus.

And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked, Rabbi, when did you get here?

Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I tell you, You are not looking for me because you saw the miracles, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled.

Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to everlasting life, which the Son of man will give to you: for God the Father has placed his seal upon him.

¶ Then they said to him, What must we do, that we might do what God requires?

Jesus replied, This is what God requires, that you believe on him whom he has sent.

They then asked him, What sign will you perform that we may see, and believe you? what will you do?

Our fathers ate manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

Then Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I tell you, It is not Moses who gave you bread from heaven; but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.

For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world.

Then they said, Lord, from now on give us this bread.

And Jesus replied, I am the bread of life: he who comes to me will never hunger; and he who believes in me will never thirst.

But as I told you, You have seen me, and still do not believe.

Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me; and I will never turn away anyone who comes to me.

For I did not come down from heaven to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

And this is the will of the Father who sent me, that I should not lose any of those he has given me, but should raise them up again on the last day.

And this is the will of him who sent me, that every one who looks to the Son, and believes on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up on the last day.

The Jews then murmured against him, because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven.

And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how can he then say, I came down from heaven?

Jesus then responded by saying, Stop your murmuring.

No man can come to me, unless the Father who has sent me draws him: and I will raise him up on the last day.

It is written in the prophets, They will all be taught by God. Therefore everyone who listens to the Father, and learns from him, comes to me.

Not that anyone has seen the Father, save he who is from God, he has seen the Father.

Truly, truly, I tell you, He who believes on me has everlasting life.

I am the bread of life.

Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, that a man may eat of, and not die.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven: if a man eats of this bread, he will live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

The Jews therefore debated among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

Then Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I tell you, Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

Whoever eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

He who eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, dwells in me, and I in him.

As the living Father has sent me, and I live by the Father: so he who feeds on me, will live because of me.

This is the bread that came down from heaven: unlike your fathers who ate manna, and died: he who eats of this bread will live for ever.

He said these things while teaching in the synagogue, in Capernaum.

¶ Upon hearing this, many of his disciples said, This is a difficult teaching; who can accept it?

But Jesus knowing that his disciples were grumbling about it, said to them, Does this offend you?

What if you see the Son of man ascend up to where he was before?

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh does not help: the words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.

But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe, and who would betray him.

And he added, That is why I told you, that no one can come to me, unless the Father enables him.

After that time many of his disciples turned back, and no longer followed him.

Then Jesus asked the twelve, Will you also leave?

And Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom will we go? you have the words of eternal life.

And we believe and are sure that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Jesus then replied, Have not I chosen you twelve, yet one of you is a devil?

He spoke of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for it was he who would betray him, although he was one of the twelve.

[Note: A comparison of verses 40 and 54 reveals that Christ equated faith in Him with eating His flesh and blood. In other words, everyone who receives Christ’s death as the atonement for their sin, is receiving the body He gave for them, and the blood He shed for them as the atonement for their sin.]
