THE BOOK OF JOHN

John Chapter 7

¶ After this Jesus remained in Galilee: and was unwilling to travel in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.

But when the Jewish feast of tabernacles was near.

His brothers said to him, Leave this place, and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles that you do.

For no one who seeks to be known publicly, does anything in secret. If you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.

For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

Then Jesus said to them, My time has not yet come: but your time is always ready.

The world cannot hate you; but it hates me, because I testify that what it does is evil.

You go on to this feast: I am not going yet; because my time has not yet fully come.

Having said this to them, he remained in Galilee.

But after his brothers had left, then he also went to the feast, not publicly, but in secret.

Now the Jews looked for him at the feast, and asked, Where is he?

And there was much whispering about him in the crowds: some said, He is a good man: others said, No; he deceives the people.

However no one spoke of him openly for fear of the Jews.

¶ But about halfway through the feast Jesus went up to the temple, and taught.

And the Jews were amazed and asked, How can this man know so much, when he has never been taught?

In answer Jesus said, My doctrine is not mine, but his who sent me.

If anyone wants to do his will, he will know if my doctrine is of God, or I speak on my own.

He who speaks on his own seeks his own glory: but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him, speaks true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keeps the law? Why are you trying to kill me?

The crowd answered, You have a devil: who is trying to kill you?

Jesus responded by saying, I did one miracle, and you all marvel.

Moses gave you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and you circumcise a child on the sabbath day.

If a child is circumcised on the sabbath day, so that the law of Moses is not broken; why are you angry at me, because I made a man well on the sabbath day?

Do not judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

Then some of the people of Jerusalem asked, Isn’t this the man that they want to kill?

But, here he is speaking publicly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers decided that he is actually the Christ?

However we know where this man is from: but when Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.

Then Jesus cried out as he taught in the temple, saying, You both know me, and you know where I am from: and yet I have not come on my own, but he who sent me is true, although you do not know him.

But I know him: because I am from him, and he has sent me.

At this they sought to arrest him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.

And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ comes, will he do more miracles than this man has done?

The Pharisees heard the people whispering such things about him; and the Pharisees and chief priests sent temple guards to arrest him.

Then Jesus said to them, I am only with you for a short time, and then I go to him who sent me.

You will look for me, but will not find me: and where I am, you cannot come.

Then the Jews said among themselves, Where will he go, where we will not find him? will he go to the Jews dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

What sort of statement is this, You will look for me, but will not find me: and where I am, you cannot come?

¶ On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and called out, If any man thirsts, let him come to me, and drink.

He who believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.

(But he was speaking of the Spirit, that those who believe on him would receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet active; because Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Upon hearing his words, many of the people said, Surely this is the Prophet.

Others said, This is the Christ. But some asked, Will Christ come out of Galilee?

Has not scripture said, That Christ comes from the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?

So there was a division among the people because of him.

And some of them wanted to arrest him; but no man laid hands on him.

¶ Finally the temple guards returned to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they asked them, Why didn’t you bring him?

The guards answered, No one ever spoke like this man.

The Pharisees then asked, Have you also been deceived?

Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed on him?

But this mob who does not know the law are under a curse.

Nicodemus, (who had come to Jesus by night, and was one of them,) asked,

Does our law judge any man, before it hears him, and knows what he has done?

They responded by saying, Are you also from Galilee? Search and see: for no prophet comes out of Galilee.

Then every man went to his own house.
