THE BOOK OF JONAH

Jonah Chapter 2

¶ Then, in the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,

And said, In my distress I called unto the LORD, and he heard me; I cried out from the belly of death, and you heard my voice.

For you had cast me into the deep, in the middle of the sea; and the waters were all around me: all your waves and billows went over me.

Then I said, I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.

The waters engulfed me, threatening my life: the watery abyss closed around me, and the sea-weed wrapped around my head.

I went down to the foundations of the mountains; to a world whose bars shut me in forever: but you, O LORD my God, brought me back from the grave.

When my life was fading within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer reached you, in your holy temple.

Those who honor useless idols and false gods, cut themselves off from mercy.

But I will sacrifice to you with words of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

¶ And the LORD spoke to the sea creature, and it vomited Jonah out onto the dry land.
