THE BOOK OF JOSHUA

Joshua Chapter 10

¶ Now when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had captured Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; doing to Ai and its king, as he had done to Jericho and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

He was filled with fear, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all of its men were mighty.

So Adonizedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, and to Piram king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,

Come up to me, and help me, so that we may destroy Gibeon: for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered together, and went up, with all their armies, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, Do not abandon your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains have gathered together against us.

¶ So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, along with all the fighting men, the mighty men of valor.

And the LORD said to Joshua, Do not be afraid: for I have delivered them into your hand; none of them can stand up to you.

So Joshua caught them by surprise, by marching all night from Gilgal.

And the LORD caused them to panic before Israel, who struck them down in a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the road up to Bethhoron, and struck them down all the way to Azekah, and Makkedah.

And it came to pass, as they fled from Israel, and were on the slope going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them as far as Azekah, killing them: more died because of the hailstones than the children of Israel slew with the sword.

Then Joshua spoke to the LORD on the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still over Gibeon; and, Moon, over the valley of Ajalon.

And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation had taken vengence upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of the heavens, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.

And there was no day like it before or since, in which the LORD heeded the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.

¶ Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

But those five kings fled, and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah.

And Joshua was told, The five kings are hiding in a cave at Makkedah.

So Joshua said, Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and station men by it to guard them:

However, do not stay there yourselves, but pursue your enemies, and strike down the ones who lag behind; do not allow them to enter their cities: for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand.

And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had finished slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were wiped out, although a remnant escaped into the fenced cities.

All the people returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah: and no one dared to say a word against any of the children of Israel.

Then Joshua said, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.

And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

And it came to pass, when they brought those kings out to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet on their necks.

And Joshua said to them, Do not be afraid, or discouraged, be strong and of good courage: for this is what the LORD will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.

And afterward Joshua struck them, and killed them, and hanged them on five trees: and they remained hanging on those trees until evening.

And at sunset, Joshua gave the order, and they took them down from the trees, and threw them into the cave in which they had hidden, and laid great stones against the cave’s mouth, which remain to this very day.

¶ And on that day Joshua captured Makkedah, and struck it and its king down with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed everyone in it; he did not let anyone remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

Then Joshua and all Israel went from Makkedah, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

And the LORD also delivered it, and its king, into the hand of Israel; and he struck it down with the edge of the sword, along with all the people who were in it; he did not let any remain; but did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

And Joshua, along with all of Israel, went from Libnah to Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all of the people in it, just as he had done to Libnah.

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people down, until there were none remaining.

And from Lachish Joshua, along with all of Israel, went to Eglon; and encamped against it, and fought against it:

And they took it on that day, and struck it down with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying all of the people who were in it that day, just as he had done to Lachish.

And Joshua, along with all of Israel, went from Eglon to Hebron; and they fought against it:

And they took it, and struck it, its king, its towns, and all the people in it, with the edge of the sword; he left none remaining, doing to it what he had done to Eglon; utterly destroying it, and all the people in it.

And Joshua, along with all of Israel, returned to Debir; and fought against it:

And he took it, its king, and all its cities; and they struck them with the edge of the sword, utterly destroyed all the people who were in it; he left none remaining: doing to Debir what he had done to Hebron, and to its king; and to Libnah, and its king.

So Joshua conquered the entire country, the hill country, the south, the lowland, and the slopes, along with all their kings: he left no one remaining, but utterly destroyed all who breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.

Joshua defeated them from Kadeshbarnea to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.

And Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.

And Joshua, along with all of Israel, returned to the camp at Gilgal.
