THE BOOK OF JOSHUA

Joshua Chapter 5

¶ When all the kings of the Amorites, who were on the west side of the Jordan, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the children of Israel, until we had crossed over, their hearts melted, and there was no spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

At that time the LORD said to Joshua, Make knives of flint, and once again circumcise the children of Israel.

So Joshua made flint knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

Now this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: All of the males who came out of Egypt, all of the men of war, died in the wilderness along the way, after they came out of Egypt.

Now all the people who came out were circumcised: but all the people who were born in the wilderness along the way after they left Egypt, had not been circumcised.

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the men who could go to war, that came out of Egypt, were gone, because they did not hearken to the voice of the LORD: to them the LORD swore that he would not let them see the land, which he promised to their fathers with an oath that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.

And Joshua circumcised their children, whom he raised up in their place: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them along the way.

And it came to pass, when they had finished circumcising all the people, that they remained in their places in the camp, till they were healed.

And the LORD said to Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. Therefore the name of the place is called Gilgal to this day.

¶ And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.

On the day after the passover, that very day, they ate the grain that had been raised on the land, unleavened cakes, and parched grain.

And on the day after they had eaten the grain that had been raised on the land, the manna ceased; and the children of Israel did not have manna any longer; but that year they ate what grew in the land of Canaan.

¶ And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up, and, behold, a man stood in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand: and Joshua went to him, and said to him, Are you for us, or for our adversaries?

And he said, Neither; but I have come now as commander of the LORD’s army. And Joshua fell with his face to the earth, and worshiped, and said to him, What has my lord to say to his servant?

And the commander of the LORD’S army said to Joshua, Remove your shoes from your feet; for the place on which you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.
