THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 10

¶ Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them ahead of him two by two into every town and place, where he would go.

And he told them, The harvest is truly great, but the laborers are few: therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest, asking him to send out laborers into his harvest field.

Go your way: behold, I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.

Do not take a purse, a bag, or extra sandals: and do not greet anyone along the road.

And in whatever house you enter, say first, Peace to this house.

And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him: if not, it will return to you again.

Moreover remain in that house, eating and drinking what they give you: for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Do not go from house to house.

And whenever you enter a town, where they welcome you, eat what is set before you:

And heal the sick who are there, and tell them, The kingdom of God has come near to you.

But whenever you enter a town, where they do not welcome you, go out into its streets, and say,

Even the dust of your town, that clings to our feet, we wipe off against you: nevertheless be sure of this, the kingdom of God has come near you.

But I tell you, it will be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that town.

Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works that were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you.

And you, Capernaum, which are exalted to heaven, will be thrust down to hell.

He who listens to you listens to me; and he who rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.

¶ And the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject to us through your name.

And he replied, I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

Behold, I give you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing will harm you.

Nevertheless stop rejoicing because the spirits are subject to you; instead rejoice because your names are written in heaven.

At that time Jesus rejoicing in the Holy Spirit, said, I praise you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them to babes: yes, Father; for that was your gracious will.

All things have been given to me by my Father: and no one knows who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

Then he turned to his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes that see the things that you see:

For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them; and to hear the things that you hear, and have not heard them.

¶ And, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

He said to him, What is written in the law? how do you read it?

And he answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.

And he said to him, You have answered right: do that, and you will live.

But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor?

And Jesus answered, A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, and wounded him, and left, leaving him half dead.

And by chance a certain priest was going down that road: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

And likewise a Levite, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side.

But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came upon him: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

And went to him, and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine, and sat him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

And on the next day when he left, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him; and I will pay back whatever more you spend, when I return.

Now which of those three, in your opinion, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of thieves?

And he said, The one who had mercy on him. Then Jesus said, Go, and do likewise.

¶ Now as they traveled, he entered a certain village: and a woman named Martha invited him into her home.

And she had a sister named Mary, who sat at Jesus’ feet, listening to what he said.

But Martha was busy with many tasks, and came to him, and said, Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? tell her then to help me.

But Jesus said, Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things:

But one thing is necessary: Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.
