THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 19

¶ Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.

And, there was a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.

And he wanted to see who Jesus was; but could not because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.

So he ran ahead, and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him: since he was coming that way.

And when Jesus got to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said to him, Zacchaeus, come down quickly; for I must stay at your house today.

And he came down at once, and welcomed him gladly.

And when the people saw it, they all grumbled, complaining, That he had gone to be the guest of a sinner.

And Zacchaeus stood up, and said to the Lord; Behold, Lord, I will give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from anyone by false assessment, I will restore it to him fourfold.

And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because this man is also a son of Abraham.

For the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.

¶ And while they were listening to what he said, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God would appear at once.

Therefore he said, A certain nobleman went to a distant country to be crowned king, and then to return.

And he called ten of his servants, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them, Put this to work until I return.

But his subjects hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, We do not want this man to reign over us.

And it so happened, that when he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that the servants to whom he had given the money, be brought to him, in order to find out how much each man had gained by trading.

Then the first came, and said, Lord, your pound has gained ten pounds.

And he said to him, Well done, my good servant: because you have been faithful in a small matter, take charge over ten cities.

And the second came, saying, Lord, your pound has gained five pounds.

And he said to him, You will be over five cities.

And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is your pound, which I have kept wrapped up in a napkin:

For I was afraid of you, because you are a stern man: you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.

And he said to him, I will judge you out of your own mouth, you wicked servant. You knew that I was a stern man, taking up what I had not laid down, and reaping what I did not sow:

Why then did you not give my money to the bank, so that at my coming I could have collected it with interest?

And he said to those standing by, Take the pound from him, and give it to the man who has ten pounds.

(And they said to him, Master, he already has ten pounds.)

For I am telling you, That to everyone who has more will be given; and from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.

But bring those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, here, and slay them in front of me.

¶ After he had said this, Jesus went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

And it happened, that as he approached Bethphage and Bethany, at the hill called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

Saying to them, Go into the village ahead of you; in which as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever ridden: untie it, and bring it here.

And if anyone asks you, Why you are untying it? You will tell him, Because the Lord needs it.

And those who were sent ahead went, and found it exactly as he said.

And as they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, Why are you untying the colt?

And they said, The Lord has need of it.

And they brought it to Jesus: and they threw their cloaks over the colt, and put Jesus on it.

And as he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

And as he was approaching the place where the road goes down the mount of Olives, the entire crowd of his followers began to joyfully praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;

Saying, Blessed be the King who comes in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.

And some of the Pharisees among the crowd said to him, Master, rebuke your disciples.

And he answered by saying, I tell you that, if they remain silent, the stones would immediately cry out.

¶ And as he approached, he saw the city, and wept over it,

Saying, If you Jerusalem, even you, had only known on this day, what would bring you peace! but now it is hidden from your eyes.

For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will throw a bank around you, and encircle you, and shut you in on every side,

And will level you even with the ground, you and your children within you; and they will not leave one stone upon another; because you did not know the time of your visitation.

And he went into the temple, and began to throw out those who were buying and selling;

Saying to them, It is written, My house will be a house of prayer: but you have made it a den of thieves.

And he continued to teach in the temple every day. But the chief priests and the scribes and the leaders of the people looked for a way to kill him,

Yet could not find any way to do it: because all of the people were eager to hear him.
