THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 24

¶ Now very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, those women, along with some others, came to the sepulchre, bringing the spices that they had prepared.

And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

And they entered, but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

And it so happened, that as they were perplexed about this, two men in shining clothing stood beside them:

And the women were afraid, and as they bowed down with their faces to the earth, the men said to them, Why are you seeking the living among the dead?

He is not here, but has risen: remember what he said to you when he was still in Galilee,

He said, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and rise again the third day.

And they remembered his words,

And returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.

It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women who were with them, that told these things to the apostles.

But they did not believe them, for their words seemed to them like idle tales.

Then Peter got up, and ran to the sepulchre; and stooping down, saw the linen cloths lying by themselves, and left, wondering what had happened.

¶ Now that same day, two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

And they were talking with each other about everything that had happened.

And it so happened, that, as they were talking and reasoning with each other, Jesus himself came up, and walked with them.

But their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.

And he said to them, What is it that you are disputing about as you walk, and they stood still looking downcast?

Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, said to him, Are you a stranger to Jerusalem, who does not know what has taken place there in these days?

And he asked them, What things? And they said, About Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in word and deed before God and all the people:

And how the chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and have crucified him.

But we believed that he was the one who would redeem Israel: and besides all that, today is the third day since those things took place.

Moreover, some women of our company, who went to the tomb very early, astonished us;

For when they did not find his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

Then some of our companions went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said: but they did not see him.

Then he said to them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe everything the prophets have said:

Didn’t Christ need to suffer these things, and then enter his glory?

And starting with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them the things concerning himself in all the scriptures.

And as they approached the village, where they were going: he acted as if he would go further.

But they urged him, saying, Stay with us: for it is nearly evening, and the day is almost over. And he went in to stay with them.

And as he sat dining with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and broke, and gave to them.

And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight.

And they said to each other, Didn’t our heart burn within us, while he talked with us along the way, and while he opened the scriptures to us?

And they got up at once, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven, and those who were with them, assembled together,

Saying, The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon.

Then the two told what had taken place along the road, and how they recognized him when he broke bread.

¶ And as they were speaking, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace be unto you.

But they were startled and frightened, and assumed that they were seeing a spirit.

But he said to them, Why are you troubled? and why do doubts arise in your minds?

Look at my hands and my feet, and see that it is really me: handle me, and see; for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see me have.

And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

And while they still did not believe it, because of joy and amazement, he asked them, Do you have any food here?

And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honeycomb.

And he took it, and ate in front of them.

And he said to them, These are the words that I spoke to you, when I was still with you, that everything must be fulfilled, that was written in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

Then he opened their understanding, so that they might understand the scriptures,

And said to them, This is what is written, that Christ should suffer, and rise from the dead the third day:

And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, starting at Jerusalem.

And you are witnesses of these things.

And, I will send you what my Father has promised: but remain in the city of Jerusalem, until you are endowed with power from on high.

¶ And he led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

And it came to pass, that while he was blessing them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
