THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 6

¶ Now on the second sabbath following, it happened that he was going through the grain fields; and his disciples began to pluck the heads of wheat, and eat them, after rubbing them in their hands.

And some of the Pharisees asked, Why are you doing what it is not lawful to do on the sabbath day?

And Jesus replied, Have you never read what David did, when he was hungry, he and those who were with him;

How he went into the house of God, and took and ate the showbread; which it is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests alone, and also gave it to those who were with him?

Then he added, The Son of man is also Lord of the sabbath.

On another sabbath, he went into the synagogue and taught: and a man was there whose right hand was withered.

And the scribes and Pharisees watched Jesus, to see if he would heal on the sabbath day; so that they might find reason to accuse him.

But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise, and remain standing. And having arisen he stood.

Then Jesus said to them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath day, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

And looking around at all of them, he said to the man, Stretch out your hand. And he did so: and his hand was completely restored.

And they were filled with madness; and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

¶ Now during those days it happened, that he went out to a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

And when morning came, he called his disciples: and from them chose twelve, whom he also named apostles;

Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and his brother Andrew, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

And Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who was also the traitor.

And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and a large crowd of his disciples, and crowds of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, had come there to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

And those who were vexed by unclean spirits: were healed.

And the entire multitude was seeking to touch him: because power was coming from him, and healing them all.

¶ And he looked at his disciples, and said, Blessed are you who are poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

Blessed are you who hunger now: for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now: for you will laugh.

Blessed are you, when men hate you, and when they separate you from their company, and reproach you, and spurn your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.

Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: for, your reward is great in heaven: for their fathers treated the prophets in the same way.

But woe to you who are rich! for you have received your consolation.

Woe to you who are full! for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now! for you will mourn and weep.

Woe to you, when all men speak well of you! for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.

¶ But I am telling you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.

And to him who hits you on one cheek offer the other also; and if anyone takes your coat do not stop him from also taking your shirt.

Give to everyone who asks you; and if anyone takes what belongs to you do not insist on getting it back.

Treat men in the same way, that you want them to treat you.

For if you love those who love you, what thanks do you have? sinners also love those who love them.

And if you do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do you have? sinners do the same.

And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what thanks do you have? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much in return.

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be the children of the Highest: for he is kind to the unthankful and to the evil.

Therefore be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

¶ Do not judge, and you will not be judged: do not condemn, and you will not be condemned: forgive, and you will be forgiven:

Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will men give to you. For the measure that you use will be used for you.

And he also told them this parable, Can the blind lead the blind? will they not both fall into the ditch?

The disciple is not above his master: but every one who is perfect will be like his master.

And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but fail to see the beam that is in your own eye?

How can you say to your brother, Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye, when you yourself fail to see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first remove the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

For a good tree does not produce bad fruit; nor does a bad tree produce good fruit.

For every tree is known by its fruit. For men do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from bramble bushes.

A good man brings forth good out of the good stored up in his heart; and an evil man brings forth evil out of the evil stored up in his heart: for what he says overflows from his heart.

And why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and not do what I say?

Whoever comes to me, and hears my words, and puts them into practice, I will show you who he is like:

He is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when a flood came, the waters beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded on a rock.

But he who hears my words, and does not put them into practice, is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and it immediately fell, when the waters beat against it; and the destruction of that house was complete.
