THE BOOK OF LUKE

Luke Chapter 7

¶ Now when Jesus had concluded all he had to say to the people listening to him, he entered Capernaum.

There a certain centurion’s servant, who he valued highly, was sick, and about to die.

And when he heard of Jesus, he sent some of the Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.

And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, saying, He is worthy for you to grant this:

For he loves our nation, and has built us a synagogue.

Then Jesus went with them. But he was not far from the house, when the centurion sent friends to him, saying, Lord, do not trouble yourself: for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof:

Nor did I regard myself as worthy to come to you: but just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

For I myself am a man under authority, having soldiers under me, and I say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it.

When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the people who followed him, said, I tell to you, I have not found so great a faith, no, not in all Israel.

Then those who had been sent, returned to the house, and found that the servant who had been sick was well.

¶ Now on a day just after that, Jesus went into a city called Nain; and his disciples and a large crowd went with him.

Now as he approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and many people from the city were with her.

And when the Lord saw her, he was filled with compassion for her, and said to her, Do not cry.

And he came and touched the bier: and those who were carrying him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say to you, Arise.

And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother.

And fear gripped them all: and they glorified God, saying, God has visited his people; and, a great prophet has risen up among us.

And this account of him spread throughout Judea, and all of the surrounding country.

And John’s disciples told him of all these things.

¶ And John summoning two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, to ask, Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?

When the men came to Jesus, they said, John Baptist sent us to you, to ask, Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?

And in that very hour Jesus cured many who had diseases, ailments, and evil spirits; and he gave sight to many who were blind.

Then Jesus answered by saying, Go your way, and tell John what you have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the gospel is preached to the poor.

And anyone who is not offended because of me, is blessed.

And when the messengers of John had left, Jesus began to talk to the people about John, What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

If not what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft robes? Behold, those in gorgeous attire, and living in luxury, are in royal palaces.

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.

This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.

For I am telling you, Among those who are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: yet he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

And all the people, even the publicans, who heard John agreed with God, by being baptized with the baptism of John.

But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, by refusing to be baptized by him.

And the Lord said, To what then shall I liken the men of this generation? what are they like?

They are like children sitting in the marketplace, calling to each other, saying, We have piped for you, and you did not dance; we have mourned for you, and you did not weep.

For John the Baptist came neither eating bread or drinking wine; and you say, He has a devil.

The Son of man comes eating and drinking; and you say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!

But wisdom is shown to be right by her children.

¶ And one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him. And he went to the Pharisee’s house, and reclined to eat.

And, behold, a woman in the city, who was an open sinner, having learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster container of scent,

And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the scented liquid.

Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said within himself, If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him, and what sort of woman she is: for she is a sinner.

And Jesus answered him, saying, Simon, I have something to tell you. And he said, Tell me, teacher.

There was a certain creditor who had two debtors: one owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

And when they had nothing to pay, he graciously forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

Simon replied, I suppose the one who was forgiven most. And Jesus said to him, You have judged correctly.

And he turned to the woman, and said to Simon, Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me any water for my feet: but she has washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head.

You did not kiss me: but since I came this woman has not ceased to kiss my feet.

You did not anoint my head with oil: but this woman has anointed my feet with perfume.

Therefore I tell you, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but he who is forgiven little, loves little.

And he said to her, Your sins are forgiven.

And those who sat eating with him began to say to themselves, Who is this who also forgives sins?

And he said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go in peace.
