THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 11

¶ And it came to pass, after Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and to preach in their cities.

Now when John who was in prison heard about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

To ask him, Are you the one who was to come, or should we look for another?

Jesus answered them saying, Go and report to John what you are hearing and seeing:

The blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

And blessed is he, who does not take offence at me.

¶ And as they departed, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John, What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? no, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.

I tell you truly, Among those who are born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist: nevertheless he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven advances with power, and those endued with power take hold of it.

For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah, who was to come.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

¶ But to what shall I liken this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplace, who call to their companions,

And say, We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, and you did not beat your breasts.

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon.

The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Look he is a gluttonous man, a winebibber, and a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified by her children.

Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works were done, because they did not repent:

Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, that were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

But I tell you, It will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment, than for you.

And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? no, you will be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, that have been done in you, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

But I tell you, That it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for you.

¶ In regard to that, Jesus then said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes.

Yes, Father: for that was your gracious will.

All things have been given to me by my Father: and no one really knows the Son, except the Father; nor does anyone really know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Come to me, all you who labor and are carrying a heavy load, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you will find rest for your souls.

For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
