THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 14

¶ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

And said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead; and that is why mighty works are operating in him.

For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.

For John was saying to him, It is not lawful for you to have her.

And although he wanted to put John to death, he feared the multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet.

But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask.

And she, after being advised by her mother, said, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

And the king was distressed: nevertheless for the sake of the oath, and those sitting with him at dinner, he ordered her request to be granted.

And having sent instructions, he beheaded John in the prison.

And John’s head was brought on a platter, and given to the girl: and she carried it to her mother.

And John’s disciples came, and took away the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

¶ Now when Jesus heard what happened, he withdrew from there by boat to a deserted place where he could be alone: and when the people heard of it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

And having gotten out of the boat, Jesus saw a large crowd, and had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

And as evening approached, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a remote place, and it is getting late; send the multitude away, so that they may go into the villages, and buy food for themselves.

But Jesus said to them, They do not need to leave; you give them something to eat.

And they answered, We only have five loaves, and two fish.

He said, Bring them here to me.

And he directed the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he spoke a blessing, and braking the loaves, gave them to his disciples, and they gave them to the people.

And all of them ate, and were filled: and they gathered up the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

And there were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.

¶ And Jesus quickly made his disciples get into the boat, and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

And after he sent the multitudes away, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray: and when evening came, he was there alone.

But the boat was already in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

And during the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the sea.

And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were frightened, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out in fear.

But Jesus immediately spoke to them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; do not be afraid.

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.

And he said, Come. And when Peter stepped down from the boat, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

But seeing the wind, he became afraid; and beginning to sink, cried out, saying, Lord, save me.

And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and said, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?

And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, You are truly the Son of God.

¶ And when they had crossed over, they landed in the area of Gennesaret.

And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent word to all the surrounding country, and brought to him all who were sick;

And begged him to just let them touch the hem of his garment: and all who touched it were healed.
