THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 21

¶ As they approached Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, on the mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,

Saying to them, Go into the village ahead of you, and right away you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her: untie them, and bring them to me.

And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, The Lord has need of them; and he will send them right away.

All this took place, in fulfillment of what was spoken by the prophet, who said,

Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your King comes to you, meek, and sitting upon a donkey, and a colt the foal of a donkey.

And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,

And brought the donkey, and the colt, and placed their cloaks on them, and he sat thereon.

And a very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road; others cut down branches from the trees, and spread them on the road.

And the crowds that went ahead of him, and those that followed, shouted, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

And when he had entered into Jerusalem, the entire city was stirred up, asking, Who is this?

And the crowds said, This is Jesus the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.

¶ And Jesus went into the temple of God, and threw out all who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of those who sold doves,

And said to them, It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.

And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children shouting out in the temple, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were indignant,

And said to him, Do you hear what they are saying? And Jesus said to them, Yes; have you never read, Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have brought forth praise?

And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he passed the night there.

¶ Now in the morning as he returned to the city, he was hungry.

And when he saw a fig tree along the way, he came to it, and found nothing on it, except leaves, and said to it, Let no fruit grow on you from now on forever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, How did the fig tree wither so quickly?

Jesus in answer said to them, I tell you truly, If you have faith, and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but if you also say to this mountain, Be removed, and be thrown into the sea; it will be done.

And everything, you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.

¶ And when he had entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority are you doing these things? and who gave you that authority?

And in response Jesus said to them, I will also ask you one question, and if you answer me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

Where did the baptism of John come from? from heaven, or from men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven; he will say to us, Why then did you not believe him?

But if we say, Of men; we fear the people; for they all think John was a prophet.

And they answered Jesus, saying, We cannot tell. And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

¶ What do you think? A certain man had two sons; and he went to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

But he answered, I will not: yet later he repented, and went.

And he went to the second, and said the same thing. And in answer he said, I will, sir: but did not go.

Which of the two did the will of his father? They answered, The first. Jesus then said to them, I tell you truly, That the publicans and harlots will enter the kingdom of God before you.

For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him: but the publicans and harlots believed him: and when you saw it, you did not repent, and believe him.

¶ Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner, who planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a winepress in it, and built a tower, and rented it out to tenants, and went to a distant place:

And when the time of harvest drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, that they might collect his fruit.

And the tenants took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

Then, he sent other servants more than at first: and they treated them the same way.

Last of all he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son.

But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance.

And they caught him, and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

Therefore when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?

They answered him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard to other tenants, who will give him the fruits in their season.

Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the scriptures, The stone that the builders rejected, the same has become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?

Therefore I am telling you, The kingdom of God will be taken from you, and given to a nation producing its fruit.

And whoever falls on this stone will be broken: but he on whom it falls will be ground to a powder.

And when the chief priests and Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he spoke of them.

But when they sought to arrest him, they feared the people, because they regarded him as a prophet.
