THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

Matthew Chapter 25

¶ Then the kingdom of heaven will be likened to ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom.

And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.

Those who were foolish took their lamps, but did not take any oil with them:

But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.

While the bridegroom tarried, they all became drowsy and slept.

But at midnight there was a shout, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go out to meet him.

Then all the virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.

And the foolish said to the wise, Give us some of your oil; for our lamps are going out.

But the wise answered, saying, No; there is not enough for both us and you: instead go to those who sell, and buy some for yourselves.

But after they had gone away to buy, the bridegroom came; and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast: and the door was shut.

Later the other virgins also came, saying, Lord, Lord, open the door to us.

But he answered saying, I tell you truly, I do not know you.

Therefore be watchful, for you do not know either the day or the hour when the Son of man comes.

¶ Likewise the kingdom of heaven is like a man travelling to a far country, who called his own servants, and entrusted his property to them.

And gave one five talents, another two, and another one; to each according to his own ability; and then went on his journey.

Immediately the one who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents.

And likewise the one who had received two, also gained another two.

But the man who had received one talent went and dug in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

Now after a long time the lord of those servants returned, and settled accounts with them.

And the one who had received five talents brought another five talents, saying, Lord, you entrusted five talents to me: behold, I have gained five more.

His lord said to him, Well done, you good and faithful servant: you have been faithful over a few things, I will place you in charge of many things: enter into the joy of your lord.

The one who had received two talents also came and said, Lord, you entrusted two talents to me: behold, I have gained two more.

His lord said to him, Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will place you in charge of many things: enter into the joy of your lord.

Then the man who had received one talent came and said, Lord, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed:

So I was afraid, and went out and hid your talent in the earth: see, here is what belongs to you.

In answer his lord said to him, You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not scattered seed:

Therefore you should have put my money in the bank, then at my return I would have received my money back with interest.

Take the talent from him, and give it to the one who has ten talents.

For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have in abundance: but from him who has not even what he has will be taken away.

And throw the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¶ When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory:

And all nations will be gathered before him: and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats:

And he will put the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left.

Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

For I was hungry, and you gave me food: I was thirsty, and you gave me drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in:

Naked, and you clothed me: I was sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me.

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you? or thirsty, and give you drink?

When did we see you a stranger, and take you in? or naked, and clothed you?

Or when did we see you sick, or in prison, and go to visit you?

And in answer the King will say to them, I tell you truly, Inasmuch as you have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it to me.

Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

For I was hungry, and you gave me no food: I was thirsty, and you gave me nothing to drink:

I was a stranger, and you did not take me in: naked, and you did not clothe me: sick, and in prison, and you did not visit me.

Then they will also answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not help you?

Then he will answer them, saying, I tell you truly, Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.

And these will go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
