THE BOOK OF NUMBERS

Numbers Chapter 13

¶ And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

Send men, that they may scout out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel: you shall send a man from every tribe of their fathers, every one a leader among them.

So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran as the LORD directed: all those men were leaders of the children of Israel.

And these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

From the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

From the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

From the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

From the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.

From the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

From the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

From the tribe of Joseph, that is, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

From the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

From the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

From the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

From the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up this way to the south, and go up into the mountain:

And see what the land is like; and if the people that dwell in it are strong or weak, many or few;

And whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad; and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strong holds;

And whether the land is fat or lean, whether there is wood in it, or not. And be of good courage, and bring some of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

¶ So they went up, and scouted out the land from the wilderness of Sin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

And then went up into the south, and came to Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

And they came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; and they brought some of the pomegranates, and figs.

That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes that the children of Israel cut down there.

And they returned from scouting out the land after forty days.

¶ And they came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to the entire congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

And they said to Moses, We came to the land where you sent us, and it surely flows with milk and honey; and this is its fruit.

Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are walled, and very large: moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the side of the Jordan.

And Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to conquer it.

But the men who went up with him said, We are not able to go up against those people; for they are stronger than us.

So they brought the children of Israel an evil report of the land that they had scouted out, saying, The land, through which we passed as spies, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

There we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, who come from the giants: and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and that is how we looked to them.
