THE BOOK OF REVELATION

Revelation Chapter 13

¶ And the dragon stood on the sand by the sea, and I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and on each head a blasphemous name.

And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, but its feet were like the feet of a bear, and its mouth like the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority.

And one of its heads appeared to have been slain; but its deadly wound was healed: and all the world followed the beast in amazement.

And they worshipped the dragon who gave power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like the beast? who is able to wage war against him?

And he was given a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies; and was given authority to continue for forty-two months.

And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.

And he was allowed to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and he was given authority over every community, language, and nation.

And every one who lives on the earth will worship him, every one whose name is not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

If any man has an ear, let him hear.

He who leads into captivity will go into captivity: he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the endurance and faith of the saints.

¶ And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a dragon.

And he exercised all the authority of the first beast on his behalf, and caused the earth and those dwelling in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

And he produces great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to the earth in the presence of men,

And through those signs that he had power to do on behalf of the first beast, he deceives those dwelling on the earth; telling them to make an image of the beast, that was wounded by a sword, and yet lived.

And he had power to give life to the image of the first beast, so that it could both speak, and cause all who would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.

And he required everyone, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark on their right hand, or on their forehead:

Specifying that no one could buy or sell, unless he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred and sixty-six.

[Note: There is an parallel between the beast described in verse one, and the beast described in Daniel 7:23-27, which is usually identified with Rome. If the beast is imperial Rome, an institution patterned after it might be seen as an image of it (verse 14). And the man who is the spokesman of that institution might be seen as having the power to make it speak (verse 15).]
