THE BOOK OF RUTH

Ruth Chapter 3

¶ Then Naomi her mother in law said to her, My daughter, should I not seek a home for you, so that it may be well with you?

Now is not Boaz, whose maidens you were working with, our relative? Behold, he is winnowing barley to night at the threshing floor.

Therefore wash, and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothing, and go down to the floor: but do not let him know that you are there, until he has finished eating and drinking.

But when he lies down, notice the place where he lies, and go in, and uncover his feet, and lie down; and he will tell you what to do.

And Ruth said to her, I will do everything you said.

¶ So she went down to the floor, and did just as her mother in law told her.

And after Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the pile of grain: and she came quietly, and uncovered his feet, and laid down.

And at midnight, the man was startled, and turned over: and saw a woman lying at his feet.

And he said, Who are you? And she answered, I am Ruth your maidservant: spread your cloak over me; for you are my next of kin.

And he said, May you be blessed by the LORD, my daughter: for you have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich.

And now, my daughter, do not be afraid; I will do for you all that you say: since all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman.

Now it is true that I am your near kinsman: however there is a relative closer than I.

Stay here tonight, and in the morning, if he will do the part of a kinsman for you, well; let him do it: but if he does not want to fulfill the duty of a kinsman for you, then as the LORD lives, I will fulfill the duty of a kinsman for you: lie down until the morning.

¶ So she lay at his feet until morning: but got up before people could recognize each other. And he said, Do not let it be known that a woman came to the floor.

He then said, Bring the shawl that you are wearing, and hold it out. And when she held it out, he measured out six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she returned to the town.

And when she got back, her mother in law asked, How did it go, my daughter? And Ruth told her all that the man had done for her.

And she said, He gave me these six measures of barley; for he said to me, Do not return to your mother in law empty handed.

Then she said, Wait, my daughter, until you find out how things go: for the man will not rest today, until he has settled the matter.
