THE BOOK OF ZECHARIAH

Zechariah Chapter 11

¶ Open your doors, O Lebanon, that fire may consume your cedars.

Howl, fir tree; because the cedar has fallen; because the mighty trees are ruined: wail, O you oaks of Bashan; because your thick forest has been cut down.

Listen to the sound of shepherds wailing; because their fine pastures are ruined: listen to the sound of young lions roaring; because the thickets of the Jordan are destroyed.

¶ Thus says the LORD my God; Feed the flock intended for slaughter;

Those who buy them slaughter them, but do not feel any guilt: and those who sell them say, May the LORD be blessed; for I am rich: and their own shepherds do not feel sorry for them.

So I will no longer pity the inhabitants of the land, says the LORD: but, lo, I will abandon everyone to the hand of his neighbor, and to the hand of his king: and they will devastate the land, and I will not deliver them out of their hand.

So I became the shepherd of the flock to be slaughtered, even you, O poor of the flock. And I took two staffs; I called one Friendliness, and I called the other Fellowship; and I fed the flock.

I got rid of three shepherds in one month; for I was weary of them, and they were disgusted with me.

Then I said, I will not feed you: if you are dying, die; and if you are getting lost, get lost; and let those who are left devour one another.

And I took my staff, even Friendliness, and cut it in two, so that I might break the covenant that I had made with all the people.

And it was broken on that day: and so the poor of the flock who were waiting upon me knew that it was the word of the LORD.

Then I said to them, If you think it is right, pay me; but if not, don’t. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.

And the LORD said to me, Throw it to the potter: a fine price they have set on me. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and threw them to the potter in the house of the LORD.

Then I cut my other staff in two, even Fellowship, so that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.

¶ Then the LORD said to me, Now take the gear of a foolish shepherd.

For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, who will not care for those who are going astray, or search for young, or heal the broken, or feed those who are healthy: but he will eat the meat of fat animals, and tear off their hoofs.

Woe to the worthless shepherd who abandons the flock! a sword will strike his arm, and his right eye: his arm will completely dry up, and his right eye will be totally darkened.
