SECOND KINGS

2 Kings Chapter 9

1 ¶ Then Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said to him, fasten your belt around your waist, and take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead:

2 And when you get there, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and have him get up from among his brethren, and lead him to an inner room;

3 Then take the flask of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, Thus says the LORD, I have anointed you king over Israel. Then open the door, and flee, and do not tarry.

4 So the young man, the young prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead.

5 And when he arrived the officers of the army were sitting together; and he said, I have something to tell you, O commander. And Jehu said, To which of us? And he said, To you, O commander.

6 And he got up, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said to him, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, I have anointed you king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel.

7 And you will smite the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of Jezebel.

8 For the whole house of Ahab will perish: and I will cut off from Ahab every one who urinates against the wall, both bond and free in Israel:

9 And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah:

10 And the dogs will eat Jezebel in the vicinity of Jezreel, and there will be none to bury her. And he opened the door, and fled.

11 ¶ Then Jehu came out to the servants of his lord: and one said to him, Is everything all right? why did this crazy fellow come to you? And he said to them, You know the man, and how he talks.

12 And they said, nonsense; tell us now. And he said, He spoke various things to me, adding, Thus says the LORD, I have anointed you king over Israel.

13 Then every man hastily took his garment, and put it under Jehu on the top of the stairs, and blew the trumpets, shouting, Jehu is king.

14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been guarding Ramoth-gilead, because of Hazael king of Syria.

15 But king Joram had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) Then Jehu said, If you want me as king, then do not let anyone leave or escape from the city to go to tell it in Jezreel.

16 ¶ Then Jehu rode in a chariot, and went to Jezreel; for Joram was lying there. And Ahaziah the king of Judah had come down to see Joram.

17 And a watchman standing on the tower in Jezreel, saw the company of Jehu coming, and said, I see a crowd. And Joram said, Send a horseman to meet them, and let him ask, Is everything well?

18 So one went on horseback to meet him, and said, The king asks, Is everything well? And Jehu said, What is it to you? turn and follow me. Then the watchman announced, The messenger has reached them, but he is not coming back.

19 So he sent out a second man on horseback, who came to them, and said, The king asks, Is all well? And Jehu answered, What is that to you? turn around and follow me.

20 Then the watchman announced, He has reached them, but is not coming back: and the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he drives furiously.

21 And Joram said, Make ready. And his chariot was made ready. And Joram the king of Israel and Ahaziah the king of Judah each went out in his chariot, and they went out against Jehu, and met him in the field of Naboth the Jezreelite.

22 And when Joram saw Jehu, he said, Is all well, Jehu? And he answered, How can it be well, as long as the sexual sins and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel increases?

23 Then Joram reined about, and fled, saying to Ahaziah, There is treachery, O Ahaziah.

24 And Jehu drew a bow with his full strength, and shot Jehoram between his shoulders, and the arrow went out through his heart, and he sank down in his chariot.

25 Then Jehu said to Bidkar his attendant, Take him away, and throw him on the field of Naboth the Jezreelite: for remember how that, when you and I drove our teams together behind Ahab his father, the LORD gave this judgement against him;

26 As surely as I saw the blood of Naboth and his sons yesterday, I will pay you back in this field; says the LORD. So now take him and throw him into the field, according to the word of the LORD.

27 But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And Jehu followed him, and said, Shoot him also in his chariot. And they did so at the ascent to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And Ahaziah fled to Megiddo, and died there.

28 And his servants carried him to Jerusalem in a chariot, and buried him in his tomb with his ancestors in the city of David.

29 Ahaziah had become king over Judah in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab.

30 ¶ Now when Jehu arrived in Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her eyes, and beautified her face, and looked out a window.

31 And as Jehu entered the gate, she asked, Is all well Zimri, murderer of your master?

32 And he looked up at the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And two or three eunuchs looked out at him.

33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood splattered on the wall, and on the horses: and he trampled her under foot.

34 And when he went in, he ate and drank, and said, Go, take care of this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king’s daughter.

35 And they went to bury her: but did not find any more of her than her skull, and feet, and the palms of her hands.

36 Therefore they returned, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, The dogs will eat the flesh of Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel:

37 And the carcass of Jezebel will be like manure on the surface of the field in the territory of Jezreel; so that no one can say, This is Jezebel.
